The no nonsense guide to creating your wedding day guest list

Destination Weddings in Kochi Kerala

Have a crazy aunt who just won’t let you have peace? It’s probably better to ACCIDENTALLY forget to invite her.

Compiling your wedding guest list is probably one of the first things youll do and probably more important than the wedding design and decor itself when you start thinking about a wedding planner. Your guest list will affect your choices of wedding venues, and how you allocate your budget.

For some couples its a straightforward process, for others, well, its a lot less clear-cut.

When it comes to asking yourself whom do you have to invite to your wedding event, there are no hard and fast rules. Be it a traditional or a destination wedding, you ultimately will have to prioritize some guests over others and work out who you really want there, and whom you can leave off the wedding guest list altogether.

We have put together a general guide that might help you achieve this great tedious task in just a few hours.

It may seem a bit cruel to split your friends and family up into lists, but its a practical way to do it, and lets face it, weve all been a C/D list wedding guest at least once in our lives right?

Of course, whom you invite to your wedding is entirely personal, so the A-D list might vary vastly from person to person.

In your family, you might feel your cousins are like siblings, perhaps having lots of children at your wedding is a high priority, or maybe you want to keep your guest list as short as possible - perhaps even ELOPE!

The only rule you have to follow is that all the people you want there are there and that you dont feel forced to invite anyone youd rather not have in attendance. And of course, you can cut short the list where ever you want, after A, B, C or D, your choice!

Okay, lets get started, shall we? Pens at the ready!

The A-List: The Guests You Need to Invite to Your Wedding

These are the people you simply cant imagine getting married without - the crème de la crème of wedding guests. For some couples this might cover 10 people, for others, this might be 50. So sit down with your better half and ask yourselves,

If we had to get married the next morning, who would we want to have there?

  •  Your parents - It’s a stressful day for them, show some love even if they get crazy.
  •  Your siblings - You can’t leave them, or can you?
  •  Your closest friends - Let’s face it, it’d be boring without them!
  •  Your own children - It’s the 21st century, we’re not judging!

The B-List: The Guests You Really Want to Invite to Your Wedding

This is more like an extension of the A-list, rather than blindly typing names into a spreadsheet, think about the special people youd love to spend your beach wedding with, and are important to you to have there, then take a note of their names.

  • Your grandparents - Remember, you could crash their car, and they’ll still love you.
  • Your nieces and nephews - Because they love you to the moon and back!
  • Your closest aunties and uncles - The love they have for you knows no distance!
  • Your closest work pals -  Because they’ll kill you in cold blood if you don’t!
  • Your wider circle of pals - Mainly there to make some noise and take silly pictures.

The C-List: The Guests Youll Invite Based on Your Venue/Budget

This is where it starts to get difficult. These are guests youd really like to have along at your wedding or guests that it would be difficult not to invite (some families, for example, have an all-or-nothing approach on aunties and uncles or cousins). But when it comes down to budgetary restraints, the size of your venue, or simply the vibe you want for your day, you may have to draw a line somewhere.

  • All your aunties and uncles - For boozy speeches and inappropriate jokes.
  • All your cousins - For awkward but enthusiastic dancing.
  • Plus ones of new relationships - The plus ones you didn’t know existed!
  • Old friends you havent seen in ages - No, Facebook doesnt count!

The D-List: The Guests You Might Feel Obliged to Invite to Your Wedding

Ah, the dreaded D-list. These are the guests that wouldnt exactly ruin your day if they couldnt make it the last minute. Depending on the kind of wedding youre planning to have (and whos paying for it!) this assortment of would-be guests will make the cut or not. When it comes to feeling obliged to invite your boss and those who invited you to their wedding, or your entire work team,  thats probably where you need to hit the brakes.

  • The priest (if any) -  Because you can’t get hitched without him!
  • The neighbours - What will the neighbours say if you didn’t?
  • Friends of your parents - It’ll be nice to have them on board, don’t you think?
  • Children of guests - You need some to run around the venue.
  • People who invited you to their wedding - Well, you are the one who went to their reception!
  • All your work colleagues - Beware, the number depends on how you invite!
